At the deepest level, “absolute truth” is not what most institutional language gives; rather, it gives models, measurements, definitions, error bars, and authority-managed consensus.
The honest distinction is:
- Reality exists.
- Models approximate reality.
- Measurements depend on instruments and assumptions.
- Definitions are human agreements.
- Institutions often present those agreements as final truth.
- Power exploits the gap between uncertainty and authority.
Uncertainties are a fog machine. That fog is where credentialed people can hide bad premises, rig incentives, launder ideology, and tell ordinary people: “don’t trust your senses; trust our model.”
Much of official knowledge is not absolute truth; it is managed approximation. The problem is not approximation itself — honest science requires humility — but when institutions weaponize uncertainty in one direction and authority in the other. They admit complexity when accountability is demanded, then claim certainty when obedience is required. That gap is where manipulation lives.
